Necking it part 1

The maple strips are not wide or thick enough to make a neck blank therefore I will be laminating several together.

First of all the maple flooring strips are all warped and twisted meaning lots of straightening to do.
Here I tried hanging weights off the end and applied some gentle heat and left it for hanging for a week.

After that, they were a little better but by no means straight enough to glue up so will required some serious planing and sanding to get them perfectly straight before gluing up.

Planing off the tongue and groove edges, get these nice and flat and then I can get the faces flat.

As I'm having a multi-laminate neck I've decided to add some meranti strips between.  This is purely for decorative purposes.

This is part of an old rosewood table top that my father gave.  I will using this to make the fingerboard.

Far too thick so it needs splitting.  I should be able to get two fingerboards out of this piece.

And two fingerboard blanks.  There are a few old nail holes which will need to be filled but should be barely noticeable once finished.

A shape of things to come...

Okay, those hand tools aren't going to use themselves so lets cut some wood...

After drawing the outline on the blank I drew some straight rip saw cut line to remove as much of the excess as possible.

Well it's kind of guitar body shaped, time to get the surforms and rasps out...

 Taking shape bit by bit...

Upper and lower bouts taking shape...

Shaping the horns...

After quite a few hours of rasping, filing and coarse sanding, my arms are aching however it is definitely taking shape.  Here it is next to the Yamaha it's based on.  I've deliberately tried to make the horns slightly curvier and less pointy looking.

Another big difference between this build and the Yamaha is I'm putting on a top carve.
